New Boston approves first economic development plan

March 25, 2025

NEW BOSTON, Texas – The City of New Boston, Texas has approved its first economic development plan.

City leaders say the plan marks a significant step towards fostering economic growth and prosperity for the city. New Boston has been a city for more than 100 years but has not had a proactive economic development plan until now.

“With the way the world is changing, we have to get with the times. Being active and recruiting, this will be the first time ever a Central and Western Bowie County area has actually been proactive and wants to go recruit,” said Lee Elliott, New Boston SIDC executive director.

The New Boston Special Industrial Development Corporation (SIDC) board spearheaded an economic development plan to help grow the city.

Since 1990, the city has lost some of its population. Elliott says they want to change that with the implementation of a five-year economic development plan, called “Forward New Boston.”

The vision includes revitalizing downtown, increasing housing, and attracting new businesses and industry.

Elliott says data centers are a viable option for the area.

“It would be a huge game changer; there is usually several hundred jobs included at middle class wages. We’re fortunate to have Red River Army Depot and TexAmericas next door to us, but if we’re able to expand that base and bring in more middle-class jobs, the spill over to Central and Western Bowie County would be a first,” said Elliott.

Community members and local stakeholders participated in the development of the five-year plan.

The SIDC board and the City Council recently approved it.

The city also worked with the consulting firm “Boyette Strategic Advisors” based out of Little Rock to develop the comprehensive plan.
